nano@stanford offers paid, hands-on internships for local Bay Area community college students interested in nanoscale science and engineering. This program provides an introduction to how materials are fabricated and characterized at the nano- and microscale. Interns work in a cleanroom or mass spectrometry lab, gaining experience collecting and reporting data while collaborating with staff to support lab operations. No prior experience is required. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with Stanford’s expert staff mentors and develop valuable, transferable technical skills in a professional research environment.

Program Highlights

nano@stanford interns will:

  • Gain real-world experience using tools and techniques in nanotechnology and microfabrication
  • Support day-to-day operations in research facilities
  • Work on a variety of projects involving fabrication, deposition, characterization, and related laboratory tasks
  • Participate in outreach activities and contribute to events that share STEM science with the broader community
  • Present their work and build professional skills in a collaborative environment

Internship Structure

  • Work Environment: Stanford cleanrooms and research labs
  • Supervision: Guided by nano@stanford staff mentors
  • Hands-On Experience: Includes monitoring lab equipment, maintaining supplies, and supporting lab operations
  • Outreach & Events: Interns engage in community outreach and showcase work at open house events

Eligibility & Application

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old at start of internship
  • Be actively enrolled in a community college throughout internship
  • Commit to at least 2 days of in-person lab work per week
  • Work a minimum of 8 hours per week with a maximum of 20 hours
  • Commit to 20 consecutive weeks of work
  • Be legally able to work in the US
